Philly Rock Blog is giving away free passes to a screening of The Runaways. Every pass admits 2 people. If you’d like to attend, just post a comment about your favorite girl rocker of all time. We’ll pick a few winners to send to the screening. Be sure to use your real email address, so we can contact you.

Date: Thursday, March 18
Time: 7:30 PM
Place: RITZ FIVE (214 Walnut St. Philadelphia)

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning star in this music-fueled story of the ground-breaking, all girl, teenage rock band of the 1970s. “The Runaways” follows two friends, Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) and Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning), as they rise from rebellious Southern California kids to rock stars of the now legendary group that paved the way for future generations of girl bands. They fall under the Svengali-like influence of rock impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), who turns the group into an outrageous success and a family of misfits. With its tough-chick image and raw talent, the band quickly earns a name for itself—and so do its two leads: Joan is the band’s pure rock n’ roll heart, while Cherie, with her Bowie-Bardot looks, is the sex kitten.

  • I honestly don't listen to too many female rockers, but one woman I've always admired is Gwen Stefani. She has a quirky voice that stands out and fits well with the ska feel of No Doubt. She had a big hit with the song "Just a Girl," a great example of how girls won't be held back in the rock scene. Now she has a solo career, a fashion line, and children and is still rocking steady.

My favorite girl rocker of all time? Juliana Hatfield. She's such an amazing talent. "Cool Rock Boy" is a great anthem!

Joan Jett is THE QUEEN of Rock !!

Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders really rocks!
  • My favorite rocker of all time has to be Joan Jett. The woman revolutionalized rock and roll, paving the way for for female rockers to come. She even had her own record label, the first woman to ever own one! Hands down...Joan Jett

My favorite female rocker is Kathleen Hanna. She introduced me to Riot Grrrl, and got me more interested in feminism and politics. Besides all of that, she is a great musician and an inspiration.

my favorite female rocker would be Tina Turner. love her powerful voice.
  • I have to go with someone newer. I really like Hayley Williams a lot. She's charismatic, energetic, and a great front woman for Paramore live. That counts for so much in my book. The albums sound just as good, not the same energy as a live but you can feel it thrumming in there. It took me a long while to even give the band a chance and I was pleasantly surprised.

My favorite girl rocker is Debbie Harry. I loved how she mixed different styles of music and the song that showcases that is Rapture.
  • dazzledoll
My favorite female rocker would have to be Janis Joplin. She was the queen of rock funk. Weather she was singing about Bobby McGee or her desire for a Mercedes Benz her soul and emotion was pumped through every word she sang. She also had a unique and fun way of expressing herself through her personal style that made it all her own.

Pat Benatar. Heartbreaker was the first song I listened to in my first car my first time driving with friends. Though its been years since that moment, anytime I hear Heartbreaker or Pat Benatar in general it takes me back to that first moment of freedom.
  • bunnysparkles
My favorite female rocker would have to be Stevie Nicks. I love the mix of her raspy rocker voice and feminine yet tough gypsy style!

Ann Wilson-oh how I love her. Old school- like Dreamboat Annie, Little Queen. She can sing the phonebook to me with her effortless belt. But, then she pulls out the softer side of Dog&Buttlerfly and makes you want to cry. Plus, who else can make a flute rock?
