Every once in a very long while a band comes out of left field and seems to instantly reinvent what we know about Rock music. You can probably count on both hands the complete list of truly groundbreaking artists that have accomplished such an amazing feat. Big Terrible are not one of them. And luckily for us, they don’t even bother to try. When any group of people are as naturally gifted at crafting memorable Rock n Roll anthems as these guys are, they shouldn’t concern themselves with reinventing the wheel. They know what they’re good at, and that’s exactly what they do.
It’s about 14 seconds into the bands album ‘Face The Stone’ when Jon Dumoff first unleashes his golden Chris-Cornell-sounding wail. With a singer like this, a band would have to seriously suck to not sound at least half decent. And speaking of that first track, “Riding Into Battle” is a perfect example of Big Terrible firing on all cylinders. This is the kind of balls-out Rock thunder that most bands can only dream of creating. The huge chorus conjures images of some wild horseman galloping through a fiery battle scene with his sword-wielding fist held high in the air… or something really dramatic and cool like that.
Dumoff is backed by Dan & Tim Lynam. The duo draw tastefully from Classic Rock influences like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix without ever sounding derivative. They cover as much ground as they should and never stray too far in any one direction. “Ocean” is as powerful as it is pretty, and would be right at home on the Temple of the Dog album. Considering how timeless and perfect that album is, this is one serious accomplishment. “Renegade” on the other hand keeps it gritty most of the way through. If you like Rock music in general, it’s hard to imagine that you wouldn’t enjoy this album. Big Terrible are the real deal.
